Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is named after former Arizona governor and U.S. senator, Barry Goldwater. The airport was originally built in 1930 as Flagstaff Municipal Airport. In 1940, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) began construction of a new passenger terminal and runway. The project was completed in 1942 and the airport was renamed Flagstaff-Weatherford Airport, after the CAA’s regional engineer, Harry Weatherford.
In 1950, the airport was again renamed, this time to Flagstaff-Pulliam Airport, in honor of former Arizona governor and U.S. senator, Barry Goldwater. In 1962, a new passenger terminal was built and the runway was lengthened to its current length. In the 1970s and 1980s, a number of improvements were made to the airport, including the construction of a new passenger terminal, runway lighting, and navigational aids. In addition, an instrument landing system was installed in 1984.
